Case
About the Company
SonneNext energy GmbH was founded through the collaboration of IVG energy solution GmbH and Hans Jörg Hölzenbein to enable PV system operators to achieve higher earnings for their self-generated electricity. With its AI-driven energy management system AI·leen, which uses integrated forecasting tools to optimize both electricity consumption and generation, system operators can sell electricity on the market at peak prices with time delays - especially if they have a battery storage system.

Initial Situation
Thanks to battery storage and home energy management systems (HEMS), electricity can be stored flexibly and fed into the grid when market prices are higher. However, challenges remain: many HEMS systems do not allow for price-based control, the aggregation of smaller installations is often economically unattractive and suitable dynamic electricity tariffs are not always available.
Goal
SonneNext energy GmbH aimed to expand its service offering by optimizing the aggregation of PV electricity and introducing a dynamic tariff based on the Lumenaza SaaS platform. With the support of AI, the cloud-based intelligent energy management system AI·leen can not only analyze household self-consumption but also optimize feed-in and electricity procurement for maximum economic benefit.
Solution
SonneNext, with the challenges mentioned above in mind, initiated a partnership with Lumenaza at the end of 2023. The primary goal of SonneNext was to expand its innovative energy management system AI·leen with equally innovative aggregation and electricity supply offerings and launch it as a comprehensive market solution. As an established SaaS platform provider for holistic energy supply and aggregation, Lumenaza is the ideal partner. Since the beginning of the collaboration, Lumenaza has managed all relevant energy market processes, while SonneNext continues to act as the central point of contact and full-solution provider for customers.
Solution Approach by SonneNext
AI·leen is an innovative energy management system that connects photovoltaic systems and households with the electricity market (EPEX). Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), as well as the analysis of market prices, consumption behavior, and weather data, the SonneNext system optimizes the use of self-generated electricity from both a sustainability and profitability perspective.
By combining the AI-driven energy management system AI·leen with Lumenaza’s aggregation solutions and dynamic electricity tariffs, a photovoltaic system can generate significant additional income.
The system follows various strategies to optimize energy utilization, it prioritizes self-consumption of the generated electricity, uses low market prices for purchasing additional energy, and sells surplus electricity at high prices to maximize revenue.
Solution Approach and Contribution of Lumenaza
With the vision of connecting producers and consumers of green, decentralized energy, Lumenaza has been committed to the digital transformation of the energy industry since 2013. Lumenaza’s highly automated and flexible SaaS platform for aggregation and energy supply enables providers of hardware systems such as HEMS, battery storage, and wallboxes to establish themselves under their own brand as aggregators and electricity providers, without having to build an extensive IT infrastructure.
Lumenaza takes care of all necessary processes, including market communication and billing. A central role is played by Lumenaza’s virtual power plant, which has been designed and optimized specifically for the aggregation of medium-sized and small installations. The high degree of automation and low cost-to-serve allow electricity providers and aggregators to develop profitable business models for these segments. Thanks to Lumenaza’s innovative electricity brokering model, they can also reduce costs in ongoing operations and outsource trading risks.
»By using the Lumenaza software platform, we can offer our customers an even more comprehensive package. Our combined expertise allows us to maximize the value of solar energy while making a positive contribution to climate neutrality.«
Hans Jörg Hölzenbein, Managing Director of SonneNext energy GmbH
Result
The results are clear: the interaction between the AI-optimized HEMS and the tailored solutions for aggregation and electricity supply delivers the expected economic benefits. Through intelligent analysis, AI·leen identifies patterns in household energy consumption and predicts future usage trends, ensuring efficient energy management. AI·leen also forecasts future energy prices and uses this knowledge to maximize the benefits of the photovoltaic system. Calculations by SonneNext show that a PV system with a capacity of 12 kWp and a battery storage of 40 kWh can generate annual earnings of €2,541.52. Additionally, savings of approximately €520 can be achieved through a dynamic electricity tariff with an annual consumption of 4,000 kWh. In comparison, the same system would generate only €1,068.23 through the EEG feed-in tariff over the same period. This translates to an increase in profitability of 186.6%. Furthermore, the recently decided removal of feed-in compensation during negative electricity prices for new installations creates additional disadvantages for system owners relying on the fixed EEG tariff. These losses have not yet been accounted for in the example calculation below. The conclusion is clear: this business model has a promising future. The solutions developed by SonneNext and Lumenaza complement each other, creating significant added value - especially when combined. By offering automated features, they empower prosumers to actively participate in the energy market, allowing them to benefit from price fluctuations while also contributing to grid stability.
